SignEasy was founded by Sunil Patro, a technologist, product thinker and entrepreneur. After facing numerous problems to sign an important job offer while traveling in Mexico, he was inspired to build a product that could solve this hindrance. Since bootstrapping SignEasy in 2010, the business has grown into a profitable company approaching 3 Million downloads with a 5 star rating in over 150 countries, ranked in top 10 grossing apps and top 100 downloaded apps for business, including Apple’s Best New Apps and Editor’s choice picks. We chat with Sunil about the Venture.
An Excerpt from the Interview
- What made you start your venture?
Opportunity, the mobile space was nascent. I faced a situation that made me lose precious vacation time due to paperwork which needed to be signed and submitted immediately. Back in 2009 there was no mobile app solving this pain point, I had to look for a place to get the offer letter printed for me to be able to sign it, scan it and send it from an Internet cafe. No one in the market was focusing on this idea, so I decided to start working on it.
- What has been key in your business success?
Early monetization of the product

- What were major challenges and how did you overcome them?
Scaling, both in terms of product and team. I generally reach out to my network for advice from people who are experienced in the subject matter or who might know someone who is.
Competition. When new players join the market, the challenge becomes differentiation. We focus on a simple, easy to use product which fulfills the requirements of the SMB market.
Operating outside of our primary customer base. I travel frequently to US.
- Do you have a mentor who advises you on matters of the business?
Yes, primarily from Microsoft Ventures, ISPIRT and AngelPrime – Mukund Mohan, Sharad Sharma, Sridhar Vembu and Sreekandh Balakrishnan.
- Have you benefitted from the use of a specific technology for your regular operations?
Cloud based computing technologies like AWS have simplified the infrastructure and operational needs of our business.
The API-zation and SaaS-fication of various technology services and tools also makes it easier to enhance our product features by integrating with them.
- What strategy do you follow for customer satisfaction and expansion?
At SignEasy we ensure that each employee of the company is involved in customer support. It is important to understand the pain points of our users and to get a sense of their product perception.
- What are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Go getter – To be prepared to be hands on, to think and act fast.
Focus – It is important to master the art of concentration as you are involved in many areas of the company. To be able to zoom out, switch context and focus your mind again on another matter. An example of this is being able to switch from short, mid and long term goals.
Perseverance – Think big, have a clear strategy, work hard, stay at it.
